The evolution of the packaging and intralogistics ecosystem is not limited to traditional materials: it is driving industries to innovate to design more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.

Growing consumer demand

Beyond the legislative imperatives aimed at reducing the ecological footprint of production, it is the consumers themselves who demand more environmentally friendly products. Current trends, such as going back to home-made and buying in bulk, are transforming the use of packaging, favoring reusable containers and packaging created by the user or buyer. Packaging professionals, anxious to meet this new demand and growing ecological challenges, are showing creativity to offer innovative packaging, real showcases of their CSR commitment.

Alternative materials on the rise

Alternative materials are growing rapidly, supported by technological innovations and regulatory changes.

Among the emerging solutions:

  • Bioplastics : made from renewable raw materials such as corn starch, sugar cane or algae, these biodegradable plastics offer an interesting alternative to conventional plastics. PLA (polylactic acid), for example, decomposes naturally within a few months under controlled industrial conditions.
  • Mushroom-based materials : produced from mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms, these materials are fully compostable and biodegradable. They offer a unique solution to address environmental concerns, including replacing the polystyrene traditionally used for product protective pads.
  • Cellulose films : made from wood or cotton fibres, these films are a biodegradable alternative to plastic film. They are often used for the packaging of food and perishable products, providing a more eco-friendly solution while maintaining product quality.
  • Kraft paper and recycled cardboard : these materials are becoming increasingly popular, offering sustainable solutions while adding a touch of originality to the packaging. They are used in a variety of industries, including food, cosmetics, and consumer products.

Evolving regulations

French and European legislation is evolving to encourage the adoption of alternative materials. The AGEC Law (Anti-Waste for a Circular Economy) sets ambitious objectives, including the end of the marketing of single-use plastic packaging by 2040. It is based on a 3R strategy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycling. Presented in June 2025, the 2025-2030 national plastic plan, which focuses mainly on the development of recycling, offers financial incentives for the use of recycled plastic and adjusts the eco-contribution to promote reusable packaging.
