For a long time, glass was confined to a traditional role in packaging, but it is now back in the spotlight, thanks in particular to its recyclability. In a context of accelerated ecological transition, reinforced European regulations and ever-increasing consumer expectations, this material now embodies a certain balance between sustainability, circularity and innovation.

A particularly attractive material for the packaging industry

With a market valued at €57.9 billion in 2024, and projections reaching nearly €80.6 billion by 2032, glass packaging confirms its attractiveness. Between 2025 and 2032, its average annual growth is estimated at +4.2%, thanks in particular to the attention paid to its recyclability – 86% in 2023.

Today, it benefits from a renewed interest in several sectors:

  • premium drinks (wines, spirits, craft beers),
  • food (jars, reusable jars),
  • high-end cosmetics and perfumery, where the qualitative perception of the material is a real brand asset.

An ambitious regulatory framework

Governed by the AGEC law and the European PPWR (Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation), the reuse of glass is a major challenge. In France, the former aspires to reach 10% of packaging reused by 2027 and 100% by 2040. According to Citeo, 77% of French consumers would be ready to adopt reuse if it were available in their usual store. Aware of this problem, the organisation initiated the ReUse approach by bringing together a hundred or so players around a common objective: to create a national and shared reuse system for food packaging in supermarkets. Thus, vast large-scale deposit experiments are currently taking place in 4 French regions – Brittany, Normandy, Hauts-de-France, Pays de la Loire – affecting 16 million potential consumers and involving more than 30 million standardised packaging.

In this context, glass is positioned as an ideal candidate for reuse: neutral, inert, infinitely recyclable, and now technologically optimized to meet the challenges of circularity.

Industrial innovations: ever greener glass

The current trend towards a responsible economy is pushing glassmakers to invest massively in the decarbonization of processes. In this sense, innovative solutions are being developed. Other innovations impacting packaging are also taken into account during their production:

  • Customized packaging: shape, color and custom digital printing to create a strong sensory experience.
  • Self-adhesive label & high-definition label printing: Stand out your bottles with clear product labeling, even in wet areas.
  • Packaging innovation: lightweight glass, reinforced cullet and new closures that reduce weight without compromising safety.
