In a context of increased eco-design and regulatory pressure, metal is emerging as a key material for sustainable packaging. Infinitely recyclable without loss of quality, robust, efficient and rewarding for brands, it is growing strongly in the food, cosmetics, industrial and luxury segments.

A growing market, driven by premiumization

The global metal packaging market is booming. In 2024, it is estimated at $126.3 billion, with projections of nearly $166.4 billion in 2032, supported by an average annual growth of 3.7%. This growth is due in particular to the growing demand for personalised packaging and high-end solutions, which increasingly incorporate metal for its qualitative and sustainable aspect. Premium cans, decorative boxes and metal cosmetic containers impress with their aesthetics and durability, while reinforcing the perceived value of the product.

Thanks to its strength, lightness and suitability for mass production, metal is ideally suited for high-speed lines and demanding environments.

It guarantees:

  • Maximum product protection, limiting losses throughout the chain.
  • Compatibility with digital printing, screen printing or high-definition offset, for premium renderings.
  • A great adaptability to logistics handling, with stackable, resistant and easily transportable formats.

Metal thus meets the growing expectations of logistics managers, manufacturers and brands looking for reliable, durable and aesthetic solutions.

A response to the demands of consumers and manufacturers

Consumers are increasingly attentive to the environmental impact of the products they buy. However, metal has exemplary environmental performance.

In Europe:

  • 82% of steel packaging is recycled, the best rate among all packaging materials,
  • 76% of aluminum cans are also recycled.

The metal industry also stands out for its continuous lightweighting capacity : in twenty years, the weight of steel cans has been reduced by around 33%, contributing to a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions and the optimisation of the supply chain. At a time when the packaging life cycle is becoming a strategic criterion, metal is positioning itself as a sustainable and circular choice. Indeed, it is 100% recyclable and meets this requirement while guaranteeing an excellent barrier against oxygen, light and bacteria – essential properties for food or pharmaceutical packaging. Brands see it as an asset for reconciling performance, premium image and eco-design.

A rapidly evolving market, driven by innovation

The European Packaging Regulation (PPWR) came into force in February 2025, with stricter requirements:

  • 100% of packaging placed on the market must be recyclable by 2030.
  • The metal, which is easily recyclable and has already been recovered on a large scale, makes it possible to easily achieve the recyclability of grade C or higher, which is required to remain competitive on the European market.

In France, the AGEC law also imposes a target: 10% of packaging reused by 2027. Pilots on the deposit of metal packaging have already been launched, positioning metal as an immediate lever for compliance.

With growth driven by the rise of personalised packaging and increased expectations for innovative packaging, the metal sector is innovating throughout the chain: lighteningmaterials, eco-design, integration of smart technologies. Luxury packaging also uses metal for its aesthetic and sensory qualities.
